Rights owed to the Parents IN ISLAM
Rights owed to the Parents In Islam family is a fundamental public unit. As husband-wife relationship is important in Islam, Parent-Child bond is also the most important one. For a strong relationship both parties should have equal rights as well as obligations. Relationships are give-and-take duties, one has right and other has duty. In parent child connection, parent's privileges are the duties of children. In Islam it is unambiguous that after ALLAH in our life parents are the persons who provide their children incalculable favors in shape of guard, clothing and food to newly born children. In parents mother has much importance because mother sacrifices her comforts so that she will be able to provide comfort to her children and father is the person who sacrifices his energy all the day so that he would be able to fulfill educational, physical and spiritual needs of his children. As we know that it's basic principle of our life that if you do a favor for someone then it should be your duty to repay himself in shape of thank you and any reward. Parents do so many favors to their children so children should also repay their parents in shape of obedience and respect. That's the reason that Islam pays so much stress to the rights of parents. According to Chapter 17 Surah Bani Israel and verses 23-24, ALLAH says
So it should be the duty of children that they should not cause any harm to their parents even if they commit any plenty. Children should honor and respect their parents when they are communicating as in above verses ALLAH says never say "uff "to them nor rebuke them. The word "uff" has no worth in our society we can say it easily to everyone but Quran lay stress on this word while defining rights of parents. This shows that they are so respectable for children that they are not allowed to say any word which provides even single possibility of disrespect. Parents are so respectable according to Islam that children are not allowed even a look of annoyance or bitterness to their parents. In Quran, verses 17-24, ALLAH says:
This shows that children should pray for their parents and they should love them. Because when they were born their parents were powerful, they loved and protected them. Now children are powerful and energetic but their parents are old, its children's duties, they should love and protect them now. This will be explained in following verses of Quran. Allah says in Quran (31:14)
Rights of parents are linked by ALLAH to His rights, so if children think rights of ALLAH are too important for them they should be aware that rights of parents have same importance. ALLAH forgives His man on the negligence of His rights but not for negligence of rights of parents. Our holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) also laid stress to the rights of parents in his teachings. In hadiths Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) showed too much importance for mother. In Bukhari,a Abu Hurair narrated:
According to Islamic teachings there is heaven under the feet of your mother. ALLAH never forgives those who don't respect their parents and who treat their parents as they are powerless in front of them. Obeying of parents will lead children to paradise. Parents are so highly regarded that if parents are non-Muslims and children are Muslims the children are still obliged to respect them and deal them decent and compassionate manner. Islam has stressed upon his followers with all these enlightens to deal with parents reverentially and kindheartedly. This will lead children to success not even in the world but also at the Day of Judgment because ALLAH doesn't forgive them who don't respect their parents.
